UAB Jamboree 2007 – WDW Invasion Meet Recap

UAB Jamboree 2007 was a huge success! We spent many hours together and had a great time.

Below is a recap of the two days we spent in Walt Disney World.

Saturday, October 6th, 2007

9:00am - Invasion Kick-Off Get-Together (Pier at the Polynesian Resort)

We had some early risers that met us for the first meet of the Jamboree. Before we took the group photo we gave everyone in attendance a copy of the Jamboree Trivia Challenge and a lanyard.

Each lanyard (see picture below) had the UAB member's screen name on the front and the Jamboree schedule of events on the back.

Seeing as most of us went to the first meet as soon as we woke up, we all decided we'd go get something to eat at Hook's Point. We did our first drawing of the Jamboree while everyone ate. Tink13 won a POTC Travel Mug and Ellory won a Mickey beach towel. Below you will find some pictures of that gathering and a grid of who was in attendance.

11:00am - UAB Group Photo at Cinderella Castle

While waiting for one of the Disney photographers to be available to take our picture theEpiphany decided it was a good time to attempt broadcasting LIVE from the Magic Kingdom. He wasn’t sure how successful he’d be but judging from the following picture, it happened!

We did our raffles before moving on. SGT623 won a Grumpy Journal and allisonwonderland won a Sorceror Mickey Photo Album.

After the group photo it was decided a ride on the Mansion was in order. Everyone enjoyed the changes after the recent refurb! When we got off the Haunted Mansion we headed over to Adventureland where we did another LIVE broadcast. DaveyPoo hosted a Pirates trivia question and daguru won a Mickey keychain because of having the correct answer. Can you guess where we were when DaveyPoo asked his trivia question? If you said “Pirates of the Caribbean”, you are correct! The entire group took a spin on Pirates. We filled a whole boat!

Here's DaveyPoo's question and the answer: What specific character names are called out in Pirates of the Caribbean? Davey Jones, Capatin Barbosa, Captain Jack Sparrow, Carlos, and Old Bill.

Before we went to Tomorrowland for the CoP and TTA meet we decided to get a quick bite to eat at Pecos Bills Café. It was a good thing we stopped because it started to rain. We would have all gotten soaked from that passing storm.

2:30pm - CoP and TTA Meet

We walked as a group from Adventureland to the Carousel of Progress. BPGStudios had met up with us earlier and joined us for this meet. Before we did any attractions, we did a LIVE broadcast. Because the weather was iffy we decided to ride Tomorrowland Transit Authority first. theEpiphany did another LIVE broadcast while we were all on the TTA. We didn’t all get in the same train, but it didn’t matter since we all love TTA. We all met at the CoP so we could ride this together. Before going into the attraction we did a raffle. Redbaron314 won a “Meet the Robinsons” pen and cup, and daguru won Wilbur and Lewis mini beanbag plush from “Meet the Robinsons”. This was another attraction we broadcasted LIVE from. After, we took some Figment pictures and a group photo.

After the group photo some of the attendees had to leave. The rest of us wandered into ToonTown to see if we could see SavetheKing87 working at one of the snack stands.

We found him and I think we may have freaked him out a bit. Either that or he was embarrased to be approached like that while he was working. We told him about the Adventurer's Club meet that night and he said he'd join us.

8:30pm - Pleasure Island Adventurer's Club Meet

Those of you that know the admin team know our love of the Adventurer's Club. What better way for us to end the first day of the Jamboree than with a gathering there with fellow UABers. We met everyone outside as planned and proceeded into the building. There were a few among us that hadn't been there before. Before heading into the library for the first show we did our last raffle of the day. daguru won a Tiki Drink Mixing set and allisonwonderland won 2 Mickey Tiki Mugs. Unless you've been there it's hard to describe an evening at the Adventurer's Club. Let's just say many laughs were had by all of us.

Sunday, October 7th, 2007

12:00pm - Mexican Hat Meet

Although this meet was to start at 12pm, the admin team did not make it there on time. None of us set an alarm clock figuring we'd wake up early enough to be there on time. Still it was a great time! We did a quick LIVE broadcast near the sombrero stand before we tried on our sombreros. We also did a raffle. Tink13 and mrsguru each won a Mickey baseball cap. Before we left the Mexican Pavilion we all rode Gran Fiesta Tour. We asked for our own boat but there was a miscommunication with the CM and we ended up sharing with other people. This wouldn't have been such a bad thing but they squished us into the first rows and left the other people in the back. We started out okay then.....the TIDAL WAVE hit us! Water came over the top of the boat. Was a bit scary there seeing as we were broadcasting LIVE. We made it back to the dock okay and was happy to find the laptop didn't get wet.

12:45pm - Become a Wine Snob!!

All I can say is "WOW"! Ellory and Kim really knew what they were talking about. They started with the basics of wine selecting and went all the way through pairing the wines in Epcot to the food available at the Food & Wine Festival. They even gave us a sheet with the suggested pairings. If you'd like to see them, click here. As usual we did a raffle at this meet. mrsguru won a Mickey head pen and pencil. Kim and Tink13 each won a pin set donated by WDW News Today.

1:30pm - UAB Food and Wine Marathon

This was the part in the day when we knew we'd all be trying some different foods. For some of us this was the first time to the Food & Wine Festival. For others, they had been at this event many times. It was at this gathering that some of the group finally had the pleasure of meeting eatmon74. Seeing as we held Ellory and Kim's meet on the bridge in France daguru decided that would be the best place for us to begin his meet. We stopped at almost every country that had offerings. By the time we got to the American Pavilion it was pouring so we went into the American Adventure. When we came out the rained had just about stopped. We stood outside for a bit and held the raffle. eatmon74 won a Mickey placemat, bowl and plate. Kim won a Mickey head pen. We continued on our way and met up with figmentathm and dlears.

6:00pm – Off Kilter Gathering & Jamboree Wrap-Up Meet

We decided we’d do both of these meets at the same time because there were a couple of people that weren’t sure if they’d stay after Off Kilter played. This was another meet where we did a LIVE broadcast and I’d have loved to be on the receiving end of that broadcast to hear how it sounded. Those in attendance were stomping our feet, clapping our hands and singing along with the band. It was awesome!!! When they played “Whiskey in the Jar”, the crowd went crazy especially us UABers. Little did we know that daguru had it set up so they would play that while we were watching. That wasn’t the only surprise in store for us that day. Daguru had worked it out so we could go onstage after the performance and meet the band. I remember hearing as we left the stage figmentathm commenting he’d never wash his hand again after shaking hands with the members of the band. Go Frank! We held the rest of the raffles while we were enjoying Off Kilter. dlears won a signed copy of "Spinning Disney's World" by Charles Ridgeway, daguru won a 20K Leagues Pin set, Mrsguru won a "O Mickey Where Art Thou?" CD, figmentathm won Rutt and Tuke beanies, dlears won a Sorcerer Mickey plush and Ellory won a Sorcerer Mickey Pin Set.

Here's where the group split up. Some went for dinner while the rest went to the Rose and Crown. It was at the Rose and Crown that daguru tallied up the points for the Trivia Challenge! Ellory won 1st prize and received "The Disney Queue Line Survival Guide, eatmon74 won second prize and received a "Disney Films" book and figmentathm won 3rd prize and won a "Disney Wars" book.

9:00pm – Illuminations Viewing

The group came back together in the Canadian Pavilian to watch Illuminations. We did a LIVE broadcast for our listeners. I can only imagine how the fireworks sounded! Here are a few pictures for you to enjoy:

We said our good-byes after the show was over. The two days we spent with everyone were amazing. We were like one big family and it was sad to part ways. I think the only thing that brightened the situation was knowing we had the site to keep us in contact. We couldn't wait to get back so we could share all our fun with the rest of the UAB community.

The UAB Admin team would like to thank everyone that helped in the planning of this year's Jamboree especially the moderating staff. Without your help it wouldn't have been such a success! And now we start planning next year!
