2 Tour Buses Crash at Disney World, Injuring 8
Mar 23, 2010 4:57 PM EDT
DEVELOPING: At least eight people were injured when a Walt Disney World bus and a charter bus collided Tuesday in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, according to local reports.

The crash occurred on Epcot Center Boulevard around 2:30 p.m. ET.

The Florida Highway Patrol said that the Walt Disney World Bus rear-ended a stationary Mears tour bus. It was unclear why the accident occurred.

All of the injured passengers were aboard the Disney bus, FHP said. The Disney driver was the most seriously injured and was later airlifted to Orlando Regional Medical Center.

Tuesday's crash is the second within a year to occur on Disney property and involve a bus. In July 2009, a woman died after she crashed her car into a bus near the Contemporary Resort on World Drive.

Eight people were injured, one seriously, because of a crash involving two buses near Epcot, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

A Walt Disney World bus hit the back of a tour bus — a bus for Waldorf Astoria Orlando — at about 2:30 p.m.

The Waldorf Astoria Orlando bus had stopped in a right-hand lane, but it was not clear why. It was rear-ended by the Disney bus.

When rescue crews arrive, the passengers were already out of the Disney bus, said Reedy Creek Deputy Fire Chief Bo Jones. The driver was conscious but trapped behind the wheel. It took firefights about 15 minutes to cut through the front of the bus and free him.

The driver, who has not been identified, was taken by helicopter to Orlando Regional Medical Center.

Jones said the bus driver's injuries were serious but not life-threatening.

Four passengers were transported by ambulance to Florida Hospital Celebration and three were taken to Dr. P Phillips Hospital.

"We're currently focusing on the well-being of those involved in this situation and we're working closely with law enforcement on the matter," Disney spokesman Bryan Malenius said.

The driver of the Waldorf Astoria bus had no passengers, and the driver of that bus was outside of the vehicle when the accident happened.

Troopers are at the scene.

In July, two Walt Disney World buses crashed into each other in front of the Contemporary Resort on Disney property. The rear-end crash sent a dozen people to four hospitals with minor injuries. Neither bus driver was injured.

Disney can't catch a break...

So are accidents up, or are they just getting more attention?

I've asked myself this numerous times. It's very easy to target Disney, especially on issues of safety. If it was a Lynx bus downtown, it certainly wouldn't be making such headlines.
