kmiller I am surprised you have never heard of the Discovery Bay expansion for DL. From what I have read it would have been most impresive as are all blue sky ideas. I will try to post more details when I get home.

Cool. Being a WDW person (I've only been to DL 3 times), I was never aware of it. After reading your post, I did a little internet reading, but I'd like to hear your description.

Hi folks. Sorry for butting in here but I just couldn't resist giving my two cents about Discovery Bay, as it has been one of my long-standing obsessions when it comes to Disneyland. Being from the west coast and practically living at DL growing up I became well acquainted with DB over the years. I remember very distinctly the model and illustrations that were featured in the Disney Gallery and Showcase out here. According to WDI sources DB would have been an all-new land at DL that would have been located either on the outskirts of Frontierland, (where Big Thunder Ranch is/was/is), or as a 'buffer area' between Fantasyland and Tommorow, which would have fit better. Anyway the overall theme of DB would have been based around the San Francisco Bay area around the turn of the twentieth century. All of the architechture of the land would have included details of the post-industrial age mixed with Disney-type touches; almost what we would today call "steampunk" architechture. As for the actual rides, shows and attractions in DB they would have, IMHO, been some of the best the company had ever created. Tony Baxter was the lead on DB and wanted to try new things wherever possible. Among the proposed attractions would have been a "Journey to the Center of the Earth"-type ride with lots of AAs and effects, (think IJA pre-Lucas). Also there would have been a ride using hot-air balloon replicas with efffects down below. Probably the most recognizable icons of DB would have been an all-new version of the Submarine Voyage using the original 20K stroyline; the other landmark would have been the "Hyperion" airship that would have its own hangar and possible attraction behind it. However, like all 'blue sky' projects money and resouces, (or lack thereof), combined to derail the project early on and the ideas got recycled elsewhere. Most notably Discoveryland at DLP. But, as they say; a good idea never goes away. Peace.
